Books on Texas Holdem Poker
Top Pick: Doyle Brunson's Super/System
Doyle Brunson is the James Brown of poker - he may not do the singing and dancing, but he is definitely the Godfather of poker. Not only did he revolutionize the game, he made it popular and set the standard for all players to come after him. And for good reason: he co-wrote the Bible of Poker, Super System: How I Made Over $1,000,000 Playing Poker. His credentials can't be argued either, having been inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame after winning 8 WSOP bracelets.
Known to poker players the world round, Doyle Brunson's Super/System is a must have in the collection of any serious poker player. And that's just the point: if you're the only one at the table who hasn't read this incredible book of strategy, skill and cunning, then you could easily find yourself in trouble.
Top Pick: The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky
David Sklansky is widely viewed as one of the world’s greatest poker authorities, and this is one of his best. His books on poker are right up there with Doyle Brunson’s Super/System in terms of impact on the poker community. In this book Sklansky discusses concepts the player can apply to all different variations of poker, including Holdem, 5-Card Stud and 7-Card Stud.
Readers will learn all about bluffing, raising, slow-playing and the psychology of poker, among other things. Most interestingly, though, Sklansky introduces readers to the Fundamental Theorem of Poker and how it should affect your poker game. Many players today truly believe that this is the best book ever written about poker.
Hold'em Poker by David Sklansky
David Sklansky is known throughout the world as one of the poker's greatest authorities, and Holdem Poker - his comprehensive guide for beginners - is one of his best. His books on poker are right up there with Doyle Brunson’s Super/System in terms of impact on the poker community.
In Holdem Poker Sklansky introduces beginners to the world of limit Texas Holdem play. His straightforward style of writing makes it very easy to quickly pick up the basics of technique and strategy, table position, how to play the flop, how to read an opponent's hand, and everything you need to know to get started playing this wildly popular game.
Hold'em Excellence (2nd Edition) by Lou Krieger
This is another very good for beginners. Starting at the very beginning, Lou Krieger walks his readers through the basics of Texas Holdem, strategy and gameplay. The title is, however, a little misleading: while this is a good book for beginners, you shouldn't expect excellence from.
Krieger's book also spends time on correcting errors you may have been making without even knowing it, which is very helpful in plugging holes in what might be a rather leaky game. Overall, this is a very helpful book for beginners, and intermediate poker players may find it useful as well.
No-Limit Texas Hold'em : The New Player's Guide to Winning Poker's Biggest Game by Tom McEvoy & Brad Daugherty
The authors of this book are nothing if not qualified to teach: Tom McEvoy is the first person to win the World Championship of Poker through a win at a WSOP satellite, and Brad Dougherty is the first person to win a million dollar prize at the World Series of Poker. Both men have a passion for playing poker online, and have written other great books separately. This is their first collaboration.
No Limit Texas Holdem is geared toward the more experienced poker player who is ready to make that exciting leap into the world of no limit play, but it is just as useful to beginners who haven't even played the game before. Drawing from a collective wealth of poker knowledge, skill and wisdom, McEvoy and Daugherty give a crash course in four major skills: determing the strength of a hand, how to understand your opponents, how to bet and how to bluff. Definitely a must-have book for online poker players and land game players alike.
