Kenna James'
Poker History
If most of your information about the
poker world comes from watching the World Series of Poker or the World Poker Tour,
you may not be familiar with Kenna "Cowboy"James. However in the card rooms of
California - from The Bicycle Casino to Hollywood Park to the Commerce Casino, home
of poker's Hall of Fame - you would be hard-pressed to find too many players who
would fail to recognize this popular poker personality. With a carefree spirit
and a great deal of charm, Kenna is the type of player who wouldn't be surprised
to find that someone a few tables down has bought him a drink, or given him a
congratulatory nod after one of his tournament successes.
Kenna James grew up in Illinois and Michigan and has lived in
Downey, California for years before recently making the move to Las Vegas. Kenna
got his start in poker as a dealer at
Hollywood Park Casino in Inglewood, CA. He then became a tournament director which
no doubt contributed to the knowledge and skill he brings to
tournament poker today.
Kenna has specialized in limit cash games, but has won over a
million dollars in No Limit Hold 'em tournaments. He finished 38th in the main
event of the World Series of Poker in 2003 and 44th in 2005. Kenna came in 4th
in the California State Poker Championship in 2003, and in addition to numerous
other tournament cashes, he rounded out that year by winning the $2500 Limit
Hold 'em event at the Bellagio Five Diamond World Poker Classic.
Huck started out as an engineering student at Cal Tech
University, but the call of poker proved too lucrative to ignore, and he has been a poker professional
for years now. He is a true poker player: While many of today's pros specialize in
Texas Hold'em,
Huck is one of the most proficient players in the world at 7-Card Stud, Lowball,
Omaha and Hold`em, in all of their variations. He has an amazing four World
Series of Poker bracelets: In addition to
the World Championship and the 1994 Omaha prize, Huck has two World Series wins for Razz, a 7-Card Stud game that is played low only.
Kenna's fame increased exponentially when in 2005, he played a brilliant final table to
come in 2nd at the World Poker Tour's Legends of Poker Championship at the
Bicycle Casino in California. For the many poker fans who may have gotten their
first look at Kenna at this tournament it was a fitting introduction, as he played
some incredible poker and looked poised to win the event on more than one occasion.
Some players might rest on their laurels after such a success, but Kenna has not
slowed down in 2006. So far he has won the $2,425
No Limit Texas Holdem event at
the LA Poker Classic and come in 2nd in the fifth Party Poker Million tournament, a
tournament on a cruise ship sponsored by a big poker room. That finish alone earned
Kenna nearly $1 million.
Kenna is an entertainer, and has appeared as both a commentator and
player on a number of televised poker broadcasts, including GSN's Poker Royale and the
Ultimate Poker Challenge. In addition, he appears from time to time on "Live at the Bike,"
a streaming video program which brings the action from Table 0 at the Bicycle Casino
directly to your computer screen. He also writes for Bluff Magazine. Kenna is married
to fellow poker professional Marsha Waggoner.
