AOL hops on board the gambling train

AOL may be one of the largest internet providers around, but while many of the Internet's premiere gurus are still trying to conceive of a mightier and nobler purpose for the internet, the folks at America Online are envisioning new, but slightly less grandiose offerings for its members.

Last week America Online announced creation of a dedicated blackjack "channel" where enthusiasts can glean tips from the pros, play a game at any hour, or watch behind the scenes clips of "The World Series of Blackjack."

Many are wondering what took AOL so long to jump on board. Internet gambling is now a multibillion-dollar business, and it seems to have largely passed by the once-dominant content provider.

In an effort to catch up, the company added a "Compete for Cash," section to its gaming portal last year. And in November, AOL struck a deal with executives behind the hit television show "World Series of Poker" to draw users to its poker channel.
