Video poker money went to NC speaker
| A campaign-finance reform group has said that Jim Black, speaker of the house, received the most donations from the video-poker industry for the second consecutive election cycle.
Black, a Democrat for Charlotte (NC), received $46,750 in donations from industry-related donors, including the $8,000 maximum from the industry's political action committee, according to Democracy North Carolina, which examined donations from the 2003-04 election cycle.
Black also led the General Assembly in industry donations during the 2002 election cycle, taking in $121,000, Democracy North Carolina has said.
The speaker, whose connections to video-poker interests were sought in October by a federal grand jury that subpoenaed documents from his office, has been the industry's strongest advocate for years.
Overall, donations related to the industry totaled $216,798 to political committees during the 2004 cycle, including $56,600 from the N.C. Amusement Machine Association's political action committee.
