Celebrity Poker not a hit with the NYPD
The growing popularity of poker, and celebrities playing poker has been well documented, but the latest trend has the NYPD a bit concerned.
The New York Police Department has made a conscious effort to crack down on the growing number of illegal poker rooms popping up in the city. Over the past month the police have made several raids on illegal poker games going on around the city, the raids have resulted in confiscation of thousands of dollars and several arrests which have included more and more celebrities.
The NYPD have caught celebrities from the sporting world in Yankees star Alex Rodriguez to now the most recent TV starRobert Iler of the Soprano?s.
Michael Friedman of the Poker News reports that ?Iler, who plays Anthony Soprano Jr. on the immensely successful HBO series about a New Jersey mob family was not arrested and was let go along with 30 other players after police ran theirs IDs for outstanding warrants.?
Luckily for Iler he is no gangster in real life and was able to walk away from the police, but for those involved in hosting the games they weren?t so lucky. The ironic thing is that as these illegal poker games are being dealt and attracting big name celebrities, their high profile players are also attracting and bringing the unwanted attention of paparazzi.
While the police are trying to figure out where the line is drawn on these poker rooms, maybe the most evident thing is that celebrities should just stick to playing Texas Hold?Em on online poker sites. There are plenty of hands being dealt, lots of money going around, and most importantly the games are legal and always anonymous.
